Mudanças climáticas já afetam a saúde das novas gerações
Ninguém mais duvida que as mudanças climáticas trazem consequências catastróficas para o meio ambiente. A transição do tempo para o calor mostra como o clima de Salvador fica imprevisível e isso afeta diretamente quem sofre de doenças respiratórias, por exemplo. Mas os problemas podem se tornar muito maiores que uma simples crise de rinite.
Um estudo elaborado por 120 especialistas de diferentes países estima quais são os efeitos dessas mudanças para a saúde dos seres humanos, e mostra que um grupo é especialmente atingido: as crianças.
Na publicação da revista científica The Lancet, o relatório Countdown on Health and Climate Change 2019 (Contagem Regressiva sobre Saúde e Mudanças Climáticas), aponta que uma criança nascida hoje terá prejuízos ao longo de toda a vida caso o ritmo de emissão de carbono continue nos níveis atuais. Com sistema imunológico ainda em desenvolvimento, elas são mais vulneráveis aos impactos.
O estudo também teve colaboração de pesquisadores brasileiros. Da USP, são coautores o professor Paulo Saldiva, da Faculdade de Medicina (FMUSP), e Carlos Nobre, presidente do Painel Brasileiro de Mudanças Climáticas e pesquisador do Instituto de Ciências Avançadas (IEA) da USP.
BRASIL
Além do relatório geral, o estudo também levantou dados específicos de alguns países, de acordo com o impacto para cada região. No caso do Brasil, por exemplo, as mudanças climáticas tornam o ambiente mais propício para a proliferação da dengue e de outras doenças infecciosas, que afetam mais as crianças. Desde os anos 1950, os mosquitos têm aumentada em 11% sua capacidade de transmitir dengue no País.
Outro efeito diz respeito à alimentação. Com a elevação da temperatura média do planeta, a produção agrícola é diretamente atingida. No Brasil, o potencial médio de produtividade da soja caiu mais de 6% desde a década de 60. Dessa forma, os bebês estarão mais vulneráveis ao aumento do preço dos alimentos e à desnutrição .
Durante a adolescência, o impacto da poluição do ar piorará. O fornecimento de energia derivada do carvão triplicou no Brasil nos últimos 40 anos e os níveis perigosos de poluição atmosférica ao ar livre contribuíram para 24 mil mortes prematuras em 2016.
Eventos climáticos extremos, como enchentes e tufões, se intensificarão na idade adulta de quem nasce hoje. No Brasil, 1,6 milhão de pessoas foram expostas a incêndios florestais desde 2001/2004, e em todo o mundo houve um aumento recorde de 220 milhões de pessoas acima de 65 anos expostas a ondas de calor em 2018 em comparação com o ano 2000. Em relação a 2017, a alta foi de 63 milhões.
Para que uma criança nascida hoje cresça em um mundo que atingirá emissões zero até seu 31º aniversário, em 2050, é preciso seguir as diretrizes do Acordo de Paris e limitar o aquecimento a um nível bem abaixo de 2°C. Na avaliação dos autores, só isso pode garantir um futuro mais saudável para as próximas gerações.
O que é mais sustentável também é mais saudável
Para o professor Saldiva, o relatório é importante porque destaca as consequências diretas para o ser humano, chamando maior atenção da sociedade e das lideranças políticas para a necessidade de políticas ambientais mais efetivas. “É possível divergir do ponto de vista político e econômico, mas existem poucos argumentos para se contrapor à saúde”, coloca.
Conforme ele explica, existe uma diferença entre Gases de Efeito Estufa (GEE), como metano e gás carbônico, e os chamados poluentes locais, como monóxido de carbono, fuligem, hidrocarbonetos e outros. Os GEE têm baixa toxicidade local, mas longa permanência na atmosfera, e por isso influenciam no aquecimento global. Já os poluentes locais têm curta permanência na atmosfera, mas causam efeitos diretos à saúde.
A questão central, aponta Saldiva, é que tanto os GEE quanto os poluentes locais têm a mesma origem de emissão. Um dos principais argumentos levantados para barrar a adoção de políticas que combatam as mudanças climáticas é o ônus financeiro que elas trazem, porém, quando estimados o custo dos problemas de saúde causados pela poluição, fica evidente que a economia também seria beneficiada por políticas favoráveis ao meio ambiente.
“Os benefícios da redução dos poluentes locais são imediatos e ao mesmo combatem o aquecimento global. Ou seja, o que é mais sustentável também é mais saudável”, diz o professor.
Dentre as principais recomendações feitas no estudo estão o investimento em transporte público de baixa emissão de carbono, migração para fontes de energia sustentáveis e uso de biocombustível, recomposição das áreas verdes no espaço urbano e, sobretudo, o comprometimento com as metas firmadas no Acordo de Paris.
