Quando e como deve-se iniciar este processo nos pequenos? Por volta dos 6 meses de idade com o aparecimento dos primeiros dentes, após o nascimento deles, a higienização já pode ser feita com escova pequena, adequada a idade da criança, e gel dental, em quantidade equivalente a um grão de arroz.
Há um creme dental específico para crianças? Sim, as crianças devem fazer uso de cremes dentais desenvolvidos para elas. O flúor presente em géis dentais infantis é importante para prevenir cáries e o desgaste do esmalte do dente. A Sociedade Brasileira de Pediatria inclusive recomenda que a substância seja usada após o nascimento dos dentes molares.
“Mas, é necessário dosar bem a quantidade de gel dental utilizado na escovação. Em crianças de 0 a 3 anos a quantidade deve ser equivalente a um grão de arroz. Já em pequenos de 3 a 6 anos a quantidade indicada é referente a um grão de ervilha”, recomenda.
E sobre o fio dental? O fio dental deve ser usado em crianças a partir do contato entre dois dentes vizinhos, o que normalmente ocorre por volta dos dois anos de idade, o uso é primordial para manter a saúde bucal e prevenir a cárie. Hoje em dia já existem produtos como os flossers, fios dentais com haste, que auxiliam as mães a fazerem a limpeza interdental dos filhos.
ATENÇÃO – as crianças devem ter seus próprios itens de higiene bucal. O ortodontista informa que os pequenos devem usar itens desenvolvidos para o tamanho e necessidade deles. Há, por exemplo, géis dentais e flossers infantis saborizados, sem ardência, que tornam o hábito de escovar os dentes mais divertido para as crianças. Além disso, a escova de dente deve ter a cabeça pequena e as cerdas macias para não machucar. “Produtos lúdicos ajudam os pais a introduzirem a higiene bucal de forma leve e divertida, ajudando a criar o hábito de escovar os dentes desde pequenos”.
Uma coisa é certa e todos devem fazer, inclusive as crianças, é ir ao dentista regularmente. “Inserindo esses hábitos desde a primeira infância é possível atuar na prevenção de problemas bucais e contribuir por um desenvolvimento mais saudável das crianças”, conclui.
